HubSpot Custom Property Limits: What They Are and What to Do When You Hit Them
HubSpot caps how many custom properties you can create, and the cap depends on your subscription. Here are the numbers HubSpot publishes, how to see how close you are, and how to free up room without breaking anything.
How many custom properties can you create in HubSpot?
These figures come from HubSpot's Product & Services Catalog, checked on October 26, 2026. HubSpot updates the catalog without a visible date, so confirm against the current catalog before you plan around them.
| Subscription | Custom properties | Calculated properties |
|---|---|---|
| Free tools | 10 total | Not listed |
| Smart CRM Starter | 1,000 per object | Not included |
| Smart CRM Professional | 1,000 per object | 40 |
| Smart CRM Enterprise | 1,000 per object | 200 |
Smart CRM features come with the Starter, Professional, or Enterprise edition of any paid hub, so these limits apply whichever hub you bought.

- Custom Properties Limit Increase: adds 500 custom properties per pack. Available on Professional and Enterprise. Maximum 3,000 custom properties per object per account. Listed at $220/month per pack in October 2026.
- Calculated Properties Limit Increase: adds 25 calculated properties per pack. Enterprise only. Maximum 500 calculated properties per account.
If you downgrade to HubSpot's free tools while over the free limit, HubSpot says you can still view and edit your existing custom properties but can't create new ones.
How do you check how many custom properties you've used?
- In HubSpot, go to Data Management → Data Model. If you see a More menu in the top navigation, it's under there.
- Open the Limits tab.
- In the left sidebar, click Properties → Custom Properties to see usage against the limit for each object. Use Calculated Properties for calculation fields (Professional and Enterprise).
HubSpot's knowledge base lists this Limits view for Starter, Professional, and Enterprise subscriptions. Developers can get the same numbers from the limits tracking API: a GET request to crm/limits/2026-09/custom-properties returns an overall limit and usage, plus a limit, usage, and percentage for each object.
What happens when you hit the HubSpot property limit?
HubSpot limits how many custom properties you can create. It doesn't touch your existing properties or data. In practice the signs are:
- You can't create a new custom property on that object, from settings or from anywhere else that creates properties.
- Imports and integrations that add fields stop working as expected. Anything that needs a new property, such as an import mapped to a new column or an app that creates its own fields, has nowhere to put it.
- The Limits tab shows the object at or near 100%. Check it before a big import or a new integration, not after.
Hitting the cap is usually a sign of sprawl rather than real need. A thousand properties on one object is a lot. Many of them tend to be empty, duplicated, or left behind by tools you no longer use.
How do you free up room under the property limit?
- Find the empty properties. In Settings → Properties, click Export all properties. The spreadsheet includes each property's fill rate and usages, on every HubSpot plan. Sort by fill rate, lowest first. The Health tab under Data Management → Data Model, also on all plans, flags "Low fill rate" and "Inactive property" issues, including on custom objects. What fill rate tells you, and what it doesn't.
- Find duplicates. The data model Health tab flags "Similar (duplicate) property" issues on every plan. On Starter and above, the data quality Property Insights view also flags duplicate, no-data, and unused properties. You can also sort the export by label and look for near-identical names.
- Consolidate duplicates. Pick the property to keep, copy values from the others into it (with a workflow or an export and re-import), then point forms, workflows, and reports at the survivor.
- Replace rows of single checkboxes. A single checkbox property only stores on or off. If you have a dozen of them for related choices ("Interested in A", "Interested in B"…), one multiple checkboxes or dropdown select property can hold the same information and uses one slot instead of twelve.
- Archive or delete what's left over. HubSpot's archive panel shows the fill rate and any "Assets preventing archiving", such as workflows or forms. Archived properties are permanently deleted after 90 days and can be restored before then. Full checklist: how to safely archive or delete HubSpot properties.
An empty property isn't always a useless one. A field for a new process may simply not have data yet. Empty vs unused vs stale properties explains how to tell them apart.
Ranking empty properties across every object
HubSpot's export gives you a separate file for each object. PropSweep, a read-only HubSpot app, scans every custom property and gives you one list sorted emptiest-first. On the Pro Pass ($19 one-time for 6 months) that list covers contacts, companies, deals, tickets, leads, line items, products, quotes, and custom objects, with weekly re-scans. The free tier shows the 5 least-filled contact properties, once every 7 days. It shows fill rate only. It doesn't check workflow usage, so still review dependencies in HubSpot before archiving.

Install Free on HubSpotHow do you avoid hitting the limit again?
- Check before you create. HubSpot's own guidance is to see whether a default property already covers the need before you create a custom one.
- Limit who can create properties. Creating and editing properties needs the Edit property settings permission. Give it to a few owners rather than everyone.
- Use a naming convention. Prefix by team, integration, or campaign (for example
sales_,int_zoominfo_,mkt_2026_webinar_) so you can see where a property came from and when it's safe to remove. - Fill in the Documentation tab. The property editor has a place for descriptive context. Note the owner and purpose so the next admin doesn't have to guess.
- Prefer options over new fields. Add a value to an existing dropdown instead of creating another property for the same question.
- Audit on a schedule. Review fill rate quarterly and after any integration change. How to find unused properties in HubSpot covers three ways to do it.
FAQ
Do archived properties count toward the HubSpot custom property limit?
HubSpot's documentation doesn't say. Archived properties stay in the Archived tab for 90 days before HubSpot permanently deletes them. To see whether archiving freed room in your account, compare the Limits tab in your data model before and after.
Can I buy more custom properties in HubSpot?
Yes, on Professional and Enterprise. The Custom Properties Limit Increase adds 500 custom properties per pack, up to a maximum of 3,000 custom properties per object per account. HubSpot's catalog listed it at $220 per month per pack in October 2026.
Is the HubSpot custom property limit per object or per account?
On paid Smart CRM editions, HubSpot lists 1,000 custom properties per object. The free tools listing says 10 total custom properties without saying per object. The limits tracking API reports both an overall limit and a per-object limit, so check your own account's numbers.
